William Smith NORTHEN [Parents] 1 was born on 7 Aug 1807. He died in Dec 1877 in Chattanooga, TN. He married Sarah DAVIS about 1830.
Octavia's father was Wm. Smith Northen ( from page 127) was born about Aug.
7, 1807 and is still remembered by many of the older residents of Richmond
County. He married Sarah Davis, of the same county, some time in the early,
30's. They had six children-James B., Wm. A., Mary J., Octavia E., Richard
L., and Louisa D. He was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, and in
politics a Democrat. Wm. is said to have been low, rather stout, bony
rather than fleshy with light blue eyes and auburn hair. His social
qualities were strongly marked, he was a fine conversationalist,
well-informed and notwithstanding the fact that he was somewhat addicted to
drink he was a very popular man. He was Sheriff or Deputy Sheriff of
Richmond county( when that office was much more important than at present)
from about 1840 with slight intervals until about 1870. The length of
service testifies sufficiently to his ability and faithfulness as an
officer. The records of his county show very little as to his property.
Except the property left him by his father and a fourth of 150 acres left
him by his great-grandfather James Alderson, to which he added the interest
of his sister Kitty in the same tract in 1833, there has not been found any
record of his acquiring property. Nor does it appear that he sold much or
any. He lived at Pink Hill where, when not engaged in performing the duties
of his office, he was employed in farming. Like many others he became
involved in debt after the War between the States, and though, had he known
it, he might have saved his estate, he lost it and moving to the west
settled near Leavenworth, Kan. After a few years he went to Chattanooga,
TN, where he died of general debility, about Dec. 1877, and was buried at
that city. His wife survived him and died at the home of her daughter
Octavia at Monterey, VA. and was buried in the Monterey cemetery.
Sarah DAVIS died after 1877 in Monterey, VA. She was buried in Monterey, VA. She married William Smith NORTHEN about 1830.

James Northen was born in Richmond Co., VA Jan. 7, 1774 and seems to have
spent his life in his native county tilling the soil. He lived just about
Totuskey Bridge, most likely at Pink Hill. It is not known whom he married,
though his sife's name was Cathareine G. They had four children named in
the following order in his will- Cahtarine M.E.S., Wm. S., Virginia and
Peter Northen. The last two initials of Catharines's name are not in the
will, neither is the "S" in Williams's name, and Virginia 's names does not
appear except that the wife of Wm. Thrift is mentioned. The immediate
children of these parties are still living and supply the information that
is lacking in the will. The four named above are known to be the children
of James Northen. He died Nov. 8, 1812. His wife survived him for quite a
number of years, She was his administratix from Mar. 12, 1813 to the
selltement which was ordered Dec. 8, 1818 and reported Jan. 21, 1819. Three
seems to be no record of the division of the land. There were nine slaves
appraised at $5000.00. These were equally divided among the four children
after the widow had received her third.
Catharine Gwinn SMITH died after 1819. She married 1 James NORTHEN on 22 Dec 1800 in Richmond, VA.
