Benjamin HARRIS [Parents] was born on 30 Jan 1754 in Albemarle Co VA. He died on 25 Mar 1834 in Albemarle Co VA. He married Mary WOODS on 27 Oct 1785.
From Evelyn Beckham Mondy's DAR appl.: Benajmin Harris eneterd the Revolutionary Army in 1775 at 21. First served as Private, then Corporal in the Va. Continental Line. In 1779 he was promoted to Capt. and held this office until 1782. From the record of the Bureau of Pensions, Wash. D.C., we learn that he was in the siege of New York.
In Edwards' Memorial Sketch, p. 9 it is stated Capt. Harris was at Yorktown at he surrender of Cornwallis and was frequetnly in the society of Gen. Washington while engaged in military svc. For Washington he formed a strong personal attachment. His admiration of the chieftains exalted charcater was unbounded.
The name of Benajmin Harris appears in a Dec. of Independence signed by the citizens of Albemarle Co. Va April 21, 1779, the original of which is preserved in the Va. Historical Society, Richmond, VA
In May 1781 when it was rumored that the British were on their way to Richmond Va, there was a call for a great many men from Albemarle Co. and many companies went into service, Capt. Benjamin Harris being one (McAllisters History of Va. Militia in the Revolutionary War, p. 106.
